What Can We Do? What We Can Do?
Opening Performance for Jacobly Satterwhite’s “We Are in Hell When We Hurt Each Other” Exhibition at Deichtorhallen
This performance also opened the 2023 Kampnagel Sommerfestival. The performance is a response to Jacolby’s Work “We Are in Hell When We Hurt Each Other”. It references the themes of the work, as well as drawing on my own intersections with the inspirations he has for his work. Elements from baroque (Barbara Strozzi), House and Vogue Beats, as well as text, an element which is a constant in my work. It incoroporates excerpts from the Combahee River Collective Statement, as well as my own text, which I related to the sense of community, the solidarity and interpersonal struggles, yet, coming together despite difference, because we share the same values.
This reflected in the rehearsal and the creation process, and transferred onto stage as well, the togetherness we have, being part of the community. Apart from the reflection of this on stage, it was also important for me to make sure the space I created for the performers was as amenable as possible, because I wanted to showcase their artistry, and not just a booking of ‘Ballroom’ within a white cube, to the best of my abilities.
